Zoe tried to keep her heart from racing as she sat down with the other cast members. The tables were placed end to end in a rectangle so everyone could see each other as they read the script. She looked around at the other cast and crew members nervously. Remember Tanner, all you have to do is read and not piss Ed off, she reminded herself.

After the guest cast members for this episode introduced themselves, Brenda started reading the stage directions. “Act one, scene one. Janet and Bob are in the kitchen having breakfast.”

Zoe listened as the other actors read their scenes. It was almost like watching it on TV. Next thing she knew it was time for her scene with Janet.

Brenda read the italicized stage directions. “Janet and Leah in the backyard. Night. The party continues around them as they talk.”

Janet was sitting at the table to Zoe’s right, but she didn’t even look in Zoe’s direction as she read her lines.

“So, you think you can get away with this?”

“Get away with what Janet?” Zoe responded in character. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t play innocent with me! I heard you talking on the phone, making plans to meet my husband here at the party. I’ll not be made a fool of in my own house.”

“I’m not meeting Bob, I’m meeting her.”

Zoe scanned the stage directions as Brenda read them out loud. Enter a tall attractive woman who walks over to Leah.

“There you are!” Zoe said as if to an invisible actor.

Zoe almost stopped breathing as Brenda read the next words on the page. The woman embraces Leah in a long passionate kiss. End of scene.

Brenda moved on reading the setting for the last scene in the script and the other actors continued reading their parts, but Zoe’s mind was still stuck on just happened. Or rather what was going to happen. She couldn’t believe it. Her first on camera part and a stage kiss! With a woman? Wow!

After the initial excitement, panic set in. Who was this tall attractive woman she was going to kiss? She’d never kissed anyone on stage before. Back in Wisconsin she was always cast in the best friend or side kick kind of parts. And even if those characters had been gay, they never got to kiss anyone.

Zoe was absorbed in thought when she heard an all too familiar voice yelling. “Who in the world was stupid enough to leave their cell phone on during rehearsal?” Ed shouted.

The noise of a cell phone beeping had interrupted the next scene and everyone at the table was looking around for the responsible party.

As Ed scanned the room, Zoe could see the little vein at his temple pulsing every time he yelled. The actor sitting next to Zoe leaned over and whispered. “I think it’s you.” They both looked down at Zoe’s tote bag sitting on the floor. Zoe’s eyes opened like saucers as soon as she realized the beeping was coming from her bag, but before Ed figured out that Zoe was responsible for the noise, there was another interruption.
